I still have locking gas caps for most all my rigs from the last time it went to $4. I keep my cars parked in a garage or otherwise in non-theft-prone areas so it's not that big a deal.
In "Nuclear Richland" most people have good jobs and security clearances so they tend not to siphon gas.
I had a locking gas cap on my car in high school. I eventually took it off because I got tired of the extra time it took to remove it and lock it back on.
You know what, if they need the gas bad enough to pry open the cover (which, for normal operation, you have to release from inside the car) and steal it, I'm going to go ahead and assume they need it more than me.
Couldn't believe it but, the new Raptor does NOT have a locking gas cap door! Nor does it have a gas cap. DH put in a locking gas "plug"...basically the same idea.
I work for a GM dealership, and locking gas caps are not available for late model GM vehicles - the aftermarket makes some, but the seal doesn't hold and customers complain of check engine lights.
As dinky as the locking gas caps are, they really just keep honest people honest so to speak. If they really want your gas they're going to get it whether the gas cap locks or not. I've seen locking caps snapped off with a regular flat head screwdriver in less 10 seconds.
Yeah, locking gas caps are mostly a pain for the car owner, not a thief. I hate dealing with them, especially if it's raining with enough wind to blow the rain on my while I'm filling the car, and I have to fiddle around with the damn lock (that never wants to release properly).
Frankly I'm surprised we still have gas caps. I though we'd move to capless like Ford started using a few years back.
