Sweet. I've had two of those. The 1994 died with 290k and only because some moron stuck an automatic axle in a manual transmission a long time ago and it got stuck for good. My one now is a third gen and I like it as much as the first. Hopefully your friend got a decent one. Not one that has been autocrossed to shet.
I didn't want to post that he said "your town car is a gas guzzler". Large cars are and he's always had large cars. With the way the economy is and his numerous of surgeries (he just had his 5th), he didn't want any large cars anymore. Gas now here is $3.47 +/- for just unleaded. I think I saw tonight that premium or maybe it was deisel fuel was $3.87 +/-.
Thats is true and understandable. My car only gets about 19.3 mpg in town and if I recall my uncles old Protege' got around 24 mpg in town, so some savings there.
I saw my friend's car today and WOWIE is all I can say. I can't believe that car he bought is in such good condition. There is a hub cap missing and a bit of paint off the car, otherwise it is in excellent condition for a car. He paid only $1150 and it truely is an amazing deal~!!
It's a 1999 Mazda Protege in great shape. It was an auction car but did not sell because the bid wasn't high enough. I was able to buy it the day after the auction.
Everything works, even the a/c. Whoever owned it really kept up with repairs. Even the oil had just been changed it seems by looking at the dipstick. Almost new BF Goodrich tires. The brakes are great. The car has no visible exhaust. No leaks. The exhaust system looks new, the muffler seems very large. It has two small areas where the clear coat has come off. I'll fix that myself when the weather here gets warmer. The glove box won't open, seems locked. I Googled this and it is a problem with Mazda's. So far everyone that has seen and ridden in the car has been amazed. Since I don't know the previous owner I am wondering if I should get the timing belt checked just to play it safe.
Most modern cars (especially Japenese and german) go 200k with proper maintence . Good luck finding one for $3000 with less than that
I have the Honda CRV 2002 with less than 25,000
miles. It has new tires and all the records for the Honda stuff. I really
try hard to take the best care for this car. Once I had though of selling it
but trust this Honda so it stays.
The taurus is a good choice. However its better to get one with the standard engine and not the one with duel overhead values..Those engine give more trouble than the standard 3.0 vulcan engine.
My Taurus with the Vulcan blew its engine on the coldest day of the year due to an overheat. The cylinders in the back apparently get poor coolant flow compared to the others -- quite a few people on the Taurus forum said they had experienced the same thing. The suspension was getting bad on it too and would have needed some big repairs this year. Its hard to find a good 7-10 year old car in the rust belt.
Your friend got a great deal on that car... congratulations! Now I have to find one.
