NASCAR is in decline. They don't regularly sellout every race anymore. The races in Southern California always have thousands of empty seats. TV ratings are also down.

I remember a few years back they were talking about getting tracks built in Seattle, Denver and just outside of NYC.

I went to Bristol one time because tickets were impossible to get but the opportunity came up and I went. The closest motel we could get was 100 miles from the track in Virginia.
I don't remember which year it was but it was the night race and my guy at the time (Rusty) had the race won until some little twerp bumped him out of the way in the last laps to get the win.
It was exciting but I checked it off my bucket list of tracks to visit and I will not be returning any time soon.
Somebody wrote that it's one of those tracks you have to see at least once and I am sure many feel the same. Probably one of the reason for so many empty seats.
I feel the same about Indy, Pocono, Watkins Glen, been there done that.
If Smith thinks changing the track will sell out like the old days I think he is mistaken.

I was at that race! And we had to stay in Asheville, NC that weekend. Talk about a long drive, on what was then a pretty hazardous stretch of road through the mountains.

This is an issue that has always plagued Bristol...there is a relative lack of hotels. Camping is huge there because of it, but not everyone wants to camp.

Best deal I ever had was while looking online for hotels in 2007 I stumbled on one in Greenville, TN. THere was some sort of glitch in the system because once I checked at they wanted like $150 a night with a 3 night minimum. I went back again and booked it for $40 a night Wed-Sat. When we checked in the clerk couldn't believe we were paying for 4 nights what others were paying for 1.

Hopefully the new car in 2013 will be the answer to NASCAR and it's decline. I think the current car has a lot to do with the poor ratings and snoozer races....like the one this weekend will be.

So far four different winners by four different manufacturers. That hardly qualifies as snoozer races.
Good chance of a different winner this week but we will have a repeat manufacturer.
Just because your guy didn't win yet does not make the races snoozers. Good chance he will win soon.

It's not because of Shrubby's terrible luck that the races have been snoozers (although any race the 18 isn't battling up front does make it seem so), the majority of races seem to fall too much into strategy and not hard racing. Hoping the next car changes all that. Why are they bringing in another car if there is such good parity already? Don't believe it is just for brand identity. Hey I love this sport, just don't want to see it wither away. And GO SHRUB!!!!

I think the races have been good... I did notice the empty seats at Bristol and it looked closer to half empty than 3/4s full to me.. The early spring race has never been as popular as the night race... so I expect a close to full house come late August.. if not then I would think that is a clear sign of NASCARs popularity decline.

No doubt the economy and gas prices have put a pinch on NASCAR fans and they are responding buy watching on TV vs spending big bucks and heading to the track. Also their are SO MANY races to choose from, avid fans are simply reducing their race schedule some... not that I am advocating NASCAR reducing their schedule.. the more the merrier as far as I am concerned!

Personally, I wouldn't mind getting rid of one of the road races... I enjoy the road races but don't like the specialists that come in for a nice finish plus 1 of those races a year is enough for me. I would prefer they add the Spring Atlanta race back to the schedule.. but what do I know.

The races I'd want to eliminate are the Chicago and Kansas races, and at least one date from Michigan and Fontana. Those tracks are absolute cookie cutter borefests. I'd actually add one or two road races.

Except for Charlotte and Daytona all tracks should be limited to one race. Add a roadcourse race at Atlanta, VIR and Road America.
