Hi Austin!
I'll be driving up from San Antonio on Friday afternoon. I'm coming up 35 and heading toward Lake Travis via 183 and Anderson Mill Rd. What time and where will traffic start getting nutty on a Friday afternoon around Austin?

Thanks!
~djw

3:30pm on 35 going anywhere. Sucks, but that is I-35.

Are we talking standstill gridlock or just your typical high concentration of crazy drivers? If I have to drive through around 4pm, how much time should I expect the traffic to add to the drive?

I would cut over to 71 and go up mopac then to 183. Avoid I35 at all costs.

At least an hour, probably an hour and a half to be safe. It's crazy all down 35 to 183 and all down Northbound 183 to Anderson Mill. That's a drive I'd hate to have to make on a Friday afternoon!

Pretty much gridlock, or generally <20 mph. No room or speed for anyone to be a crazy driver. Everyone is trying to leave early on Friday. 4pm is pretty bad. But it clears up a little earlier on Fridays, so by 6:30 or so things seem to be moving again. At least that's been my experience. It's a little better during the summer due to UT being out of session. But right now, UT is in full blast and the Legislature is in session, too. So expect no mercy.

Mopac is Loop 1. It follows the Missouri-Pacific railroad, thus the name Mopac.
