Okay so here goes,

My 2 friends and I, really like the city of Austin and the school UT-austin, however we thought to get in-state tuition (and get acclimated to the city), we would go to a Community College for 1 year, and then attend UT Austin for our Bachelors degree.

What do you guys think?

-- And before any of you are distraught that I'm from CA, I don't like overdevelopment, strip malls, and plastic surgery.

Well that would certainly fulfill the residency requirement for UT and tuition, even out of state would be cheaper for ACC.

There is the 2 year transfer core set of classes at ACC you can take..those credits WILL transfer.
There is also the common course numbering system you can use to make sure the credits at ACC transfer.

Texas common course numbering system:

UT transfer from ACC guides:

ACC transfer info:

Good luck to you.

Thank you, can we take 1 yr at ACC?
Or do we have to take 2, to get credits.

Call the colleges and ask for information.

I personally thought Austin was extremely boring. Academics and virtually everything is overrated there.

But if you don't like overdevelopment and simplicity then you will probably enjoy Austin.

2 years will get you the AA degree which will transfer. You can also try to transfer after 1 year and take your credits with you.

You might want to call ACC advising and talk to them.

I'd recommend calling them. My daughter didn't take an entire two years - took one, plus a summer, and transferred her credits to UT. But you need to talk to ACC to make sure that the courses you're planning to take will transfer.

Welcome to Texas!

UT is extremely difficult to get into due to the "10% law", which guarantees automatic admission to in-state high school graduates who rank in the top 10% of their class. You can guess which campus is their first choice.

In most states, taking ANY courses before establishing residency will automatically flag you as out-of-state, even if taken at a different school. Residency requirements are nearly identical in most states. Check the UT web site for more info.

Texas unfortunately has one of the stricter residency laws. They require you to not have taken any college level classes for a year prior to claiming residency. So you would have to move to Texas for a year and not take any classes before you could even claim residency status, or take some classes at ACC and then take a year off before applying to UT.
But worse case scenario, even having to pay out of state tuition at a Texas school is still extremely affordable compared to other state schools in state tuition.

In less you are under 24 and your parents claim the same state as residency , then you can apply for an exception.

This came up earlier- you have to be emancipated, meaning that your parents can't take you as an exemption on their tax returns. Also, you have to have a full time job for a year or two before. Anyway- yes, check the Be a Longhorn website. UT is very competitive for transfers, though. Good luck.
