Wow, this is kind of unexpected. Despite being based in Austin, Whole Foods hasn't opened a new store here in many, many years. There was a planned store in the Domain, but that was a replacement for the existing Gateway location. Come to think of it, the DT location was a replacement too.. so there has been no "new" WF stores in Austin for like 15 years.

Whole Foods plans three new Austin stores | Statesman.com (http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/wholefoods/entries/2010/08/03/whole_foods_reports_continued.html?srcTrk=RTR_7299 19 - broken link)

And it comes on the heels of a bunch of new natural food stores opening, like Sprouts and Newflower. Plus Sun Harvest remodeled their stores. I wonder what they are thinking over at WF.

Is Newflower still open? I drove by it a few weeks ago and a sign on the side of the building said "5,000 sq ft available". Didn't get a good look so I don't know what that referred to.

Which one, the Bee Cave or South Austin location? They still both are listed on the web site. Plus 5000 sq ft seems much smaller than either store. I'm guessing they are around 12-15K sq ft.

Well, Austin has grown a ton in the past 15 years, as has Whole Foods, so it makes sense for them to have a bigger presence in their home city especially with all of these new organic type grocery stores opening up as well as that ever looming threat of Trader Joes coming one day in the future.

They're probably thinking they can drive these new stores out of business or at least give them some serious competition nearby. WF has to defend their home turf!

Sure would be nice if they'd branch out to north Round Rock or Georgetown. Georgetown in particular - it's practically a virgin market for them!

Whole Foods was overdue for an expansion; Sprouts and Newflower have clearly been closing in on their territory.

I personally would love to see a real Central Market (instead of these HEB Pluses) plant itself somewhere up north, either in the 620/183 area or perhaps Round Rock.

Maybe it is a defensive move. Definitely seemed odd that they put up tons of new stores all over the states in the past 15 years, but Austin still just had the two.

I think there is definitely demand for something on the scale of WF or Central Market (BIG compared to Sprouts, Sun Harvest, Newflower) outside of the central part of the city -- places like SW Austin, Bee Caves/Lakeway, RR/Cedar Park, maybe even Buda/Kyle. Seems like they are picking up on that, except for the northern parts. But I imagine that's gotta be in the works.

Natural Grocers will be putting their second store in Arbor Walk next to Spec's in the coming weeks.

The South Austin store. I looked it up when I got home and saw it was listed so I don't know what the sign was about unless I completely misread it.
