It's a common saying in some parts but certainly true here: if you don't like Texas weather, just wait a minute. While Austin weather doesn't normally see huge extremes, the change between hot and cold or dry and wet happen so quickly that it can seem like an extreme change. In general, Central Texas has a temperate climate with mild winters. However, our summers can get hot and stay hot for weeks on end.

Summer 2000 had 41 days at or above 100 degrees
100 plus days generally occur in June, July, and August but have occurred as early as May and as late as October

Cold Days

Average # of Days Below 45 degrees: 88
Average # of Days Below 32 degrees (freezing): 19
Average Annual Snowfall: 0" (rarely snows)

White Christmas: Since 1926 there has been no snow on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve
Most recent significant snowfall: February 14, 2004; gone by noon
Tornado: Last one in Austin and Travis County was May 27, 1997; Although tornados are not rare in Central Texas, they are rare in Austin.

I actually remember this day...it was labor day, and I was flying back from a volleyball tourney in Chicago. I took off from Chicago in the later afternoon and it was in the 50's and misting...I landed a couple hours later in Austin and (although I am sure it had cooled off from day time max) it felt like walking into an inferno. I think the unofficial temperature was around 114 that day.

I remember that day also, I took the week off to paint my house! It did not take long for the paint to dry.

I was walking to lunch on that day and wasn't sure if I would make it back alive. The heat was blasting from above and from below (off the pavement).

Oh, jeez, now I feel old....I can just see me telling a bunch of whipper-snappers...."I remember the day it was 112".
