I don't know about scorpions but let me tell you I was shocked to find a huge tarantula in my backyard yesterday, I know they are harmless but they scare the bejesus out of me...

And don't worry about our scorpions... they're small and non-deadly.
Just hurts like he** when they bite!

Forget the scorpions and tarantulas, it's the centipedes that I worry about. I've seen some big nasty buggers NW that look like they could drag off a small dog. They are quite cool looking though with their red heads and bright yellow legs ( I once mistook a dead rolled up one for a brightly colored fabric bracelet). Apparently the bite usually isn't fatal, but it looks like it'd hurt like a you know what.

Wow! That's an informative picture. I've heard those barbs on the legs carried venom, too. Guess not, or that one is occupied by the dinner it's clutching. I'm wondering if the person that belongs to the hand is someone who really knows what they are doing....or is dumb as a rock because those things have a reputation of being able to really light you up. We've only seen these in Real County, none in the the two locations we've lived in since moving into the Austin area.

I've been here 3 years and have never seen a scorpion, even while hiking. Come to think of it, I've never even seen a darn armadillo. Alive anyway!

Well I wish I could say that...while I've never seen one in my dwelling, I have seen MANY around and about: bars, parking lots, workplace etc...And these suckers are very big. My uncle stomped on one and it sounded like he stepped on a raw egg. Very disturbing. I once saw one at night crossing the street...from my car while driving. Only in Texas can roaches be considered roadkill!

Its not a scorpion, which was the original post. Death to all scorpions - I have been stung.

We live in West Austin and yes, have scorpions. I've been stung twice, and they are not really very bad. I think a bee sting hurts worse. I don't know what species we have, but they are obviously not deadly.

Not crazy about Scorps...just saw the first one of the year this morning outside of the garage door. Time to call Bulwark and make sure we're on the schedule.

So this might be a dumb question, but I have never lived around scorpions. Is it safe for my kids to walk barefoot in the grass in the yard or are they at risk for getting stung?

I'd say it's generally better if they get used to wearing shoes. I'm guessing you aren't from Texas? There are many other things they have to worry about. Mainly fireants, but there prickly plants that can hurt too, and snakes. Scorpions probably not, but it depends on if you live on the west or east side (rocky west side would be more prone to scorpions).
