Funny to read this thread today. Seems the 45 extension is happening, but I don't know if most people in Circle C have really said much about it. There's no outrage. I'm not sure how it's bad for them as earlier posters suggested, though. Also seems like Southwest Austin has just grown and grown - as a good place to raise families - since this was posted, 5 years ago. South Central Austin has also, but not as a family place really; more as a yuppie wealthy hipster place.

I originally moved to Oak Hill in 1981 it was nice and green and pretty then. I still live in the same zip code 78749 so it is still Oak Hill to me, even though I now live in Legend Oaks. But I agree some parts of it along Hwy 290/71 are ugly now. The highway used to have large oak trees overhanging both sides of the road before they widened Hwy 290/71. It was horrible seeing all of those trees bull dozed. It is not as pretty now, but the Y is getting better, there are lots of new apartments around the Y, new restaraunts and businesses within walking distance. Once you get away from Hwy 290/71 there are numerous very nice neighborhoods in the area with lots of trees.

Unfortunatly the TXDot tore down many buildings along Hwy 290/71 for the highway work, then left the foundations and paving in place when they postponed the construction of the highway. Those and empty structures like the old vacant Albertsons at the Y are a real eyesore now.

Thanks a lot TxDot.

I think they should not be allowed to start demolition like that if they don't have the money to finish the work.

There's been nothing but outrage because the folks who support it are generally uninterested in getting lambasted on Facebook or Nextdoor or any other forum where it gets talked to death.

Prior to the elections, you would've thought the whole neighborhood was opposed, because the folks who don't want it are very vocal (even going so far as to climb in bed with SOS to oppose it, nevermind what SOS had to say about them building their house in Circle C to begin with) - after Troxclair was elected it became apparent that the silent majority supports it, even if it's only a silent majority by a thread.

I have yet to read a good argument against building it. Thus far they've all been 'my property values' or '30,000 new cars a day on MoPac' or faux-environmental concerns - not that there may not be any, but that it's just a handy dodge for folks who don't want more traffic near their house.
