Hi there,

My wife and I are planning to move to Austin next year. One thing we've had difficulty finding is the equivalent of Craiglist there. Sure, there is an austin.craiglist.com, but it doesn't seem to get as much traffic as Craiglist where we currently live and where we've lived previously.

Is there another site that is the go-to classifieds site there? You know, *the* place that people post things to buy/sell or rent?

Thank you for any information you can provide!

Warm regards,

Abe

Nope. CL is pretty much it. The Statesman and Austin Chronicle have classifieds but CL gets more traffic. We are probably a smaller metro area then where you are coming from.

Huh, crazy. Thank you for the information. My wife and I just wanted to make sure we weren't utilizing the wrong resource. When we moved to SLC we used Craiglist until finding out that apparently KSL.com is the go-to classified ads site used most heavily there.

We'll just continue watching Craiglist then! Thank you!

If you're looking at it for rentals, you are wasting every moment of your time doing so.

Agreed! You have a minuscule chance of finding a good deal on an actual listing there. It's mostly spam, fake listings, and other crap from unscrupulous realtors and locators.

That's where I post my rental property, it works for me. Usually get a bunch of good candidates, and I haven't had to pay for a classified ad (or even put up a sign) in like 5 years... Yes, there is an overwhelming amount of spam but somehow there are good searchers that find the real stuff.

Also there are sites like padmapper.com which filter the ads by address, weeding out most of the spam rental ads.

Don't bother with Craigslist. In Austin it's absolutely worthless. Too many flakes and liars. IF you can afford it newspapers are a great resource for ads.

Awesome. Thank you all for the input. We'll know now to be very skeptical of what we see on Craiglist and to look to the local newspapers for more reliable listings. Also, thank you for the other listings (like padmapper.com and austinchronicleclassifieds.com)--we'll give those a try too.

I've never had a problem with craigslist in Austin - but I've always used it primarily to buy/sell items and I've really good luck with that.

OTOH, I found an apartment on craigslist once years ago, but even then, the large landlords in austin relied on locator services and the smaller ones typically just hung a sign.
