Hi! I'm new to the forum. My family is considering a move to Austin from Baltimore. I have a B.S. in Civil Engineering and an MBA but I worry about finding a job that I will love. It looks like Austin is the home of many tech/IT firms and not the home of many other Fortune 500 companies in other industries.

I may be wrong. What other industries are big in Austin?

I've been looking at Spire Consulting as one of the places to apply to. Does anyone know anything about this company?

We're looking to move to Round Rock or Cedar Park.

Thanks for any input!

Everybody has a degree and many have advanced degrees. IMHO, companies here are far more interested in your experience.

Okaaaaay, well my question is geared more toward gaining more insight into the industries that are popular in Austin.

I figured giving some background on my degrees would provide some information to the reader before offering a helpful response.

Even though I have 7 years experience in construction management and 3 years of experience in program management and government contracting, that doesn't mean I can work just any place.

My brother's grandson graduated from Texas with a BS in Civil Engineering three years ago (3.8 GPA). Back then it was easy for him to take an entry level job with a small Austin firm for $60k/year. After 1 year he moved to Dallas & took an $80k job, but didn't like it (he wanted field work and detested sitting in an office).

So he went to firefighter's school & is now a fireman in Plano (just north of Dallas), where his CE degree & experience will eventually move him into a specialist position. He did take a big pay cut, but he got married to a teacher, so they are doing well & are happy with his career change.

Dunno how fluid the engineering field is in Austin these days, but it's reasonable to assume that your MBA will get you a job waiting tables in a Mexican restaurant.

Seriously though, good luck.

BTW - Austin is on the verge of building an F1 race track - they just broke ground - it's a $250 million project, so you might inquire there:

Thanks ScoPro and Austin97! Great info!

Yeah a new race track would be a great project to get involved with. My dad is a race fanatic too so he'd be pretty amped to know I'm working on a project like that.

I'll PM you in a bit, Austin97.
