The people before us had a pest company come every 6 months. We have lived in our house for almost 2 years, and have not had any pest control at all. We have had no problems at all - no pests. I am not ruling out that we will, so perhaps we will also have someone spray at some point, but I am not going to do it if there is no reason. My sister's house is about 20 years old (they built it.) They have not once had a pest company come out, and have had no problems. I know that some houses have conditions where regular pest control is needed, but I think it is an over-reaction to say that all houses need this.

Pesticides have been under scrutiny for a very long time now and have been subject to a lot of regulation. Many of the "bad" sprays have since been taken away from pest control operators, and have been replaced by products that have little impact on the environment or to people or pets. A good resource is the EPA's website under the pesticides tab to help answer specific questions. There is a negative stigma attached to pesticides so far as the industry tries not to even use words that are taboo like chemical, pesticide, spray, ect. Also most of the products used now are broken down rapidly by just being exposed to environmental factors like sunlight. There are products under the kitchen sink right now that are many times more toxic than the materials used for structural pest control like bleach, oven cleaner, or toilet bowl cleaner, just to put it in perspective. Of course pesticides have a time and place to protect life and property i.e malaria spread by mosquitoes and termites that literally eat you out of house and home. I am a believer in natural or organic pesticides, and if they work then use them. The problem is that they dont always measure up to conventional products and usually smell terrible, especially when a home owner demands results now but with special chemicals that cant be smelled and shut themselves off right after they do the job. When applied correctly by licensed professionals, then there is little risk to not target areas.

Home Team

Our home and many of the homes built around here have the TAEXX system. It was the first time I ever saw something like that. They hook it up to the house. I've always thought it was kinda creepy. I mean...could someone gas you while you sleep? Just hook up the hose to the house and blow what they use for lethal injections? Or do I watch too many Marlon Brando movies?

Do your homes in Austin have it?
