Where I'm at, HEB is the neighborhood grocery store and it's massive.

I have to agree that discontinuing a national brand like Land o'Lakes is really odd. Maybe they forgot to restock or had issues with their current shipment? Talking with customer service or someone in the dairy dept. is probably your best bet. They might even be able to go into the back and fish out some butter for you.

I know, and I could be wrong, but "based in San Antonio" and the paranoia about reprisal seems to point to a very large operation being referred to... like HEB, the largest privately held company in Texas, with upwards of 325 locations.

Thanks for the comments. I just get tired of my branded products being eliminated every time I shop. Did not mean to be racist in any way except to point out a long time American made brand being pushed aside. This was HEB Round Rock and they DID discontinue the LOL butter. This store seems to have a real drive to place private label on shelf. I will try the Super HEB on 79. Thanks

I'm sure there's a financial incentive to the store managers to do that. What private labeling does is to take marketing costs out of the equation. So for instance when you buy a package of Chips Ahoy cookies, a substantial percentage of the cost is the marketing to get you to choose the brand in the first place.

Knock out that marketing cost, as HEB does by contracting to have its Chips Galore knockoffs produced and shelved in a similar package, and they can 1) offer you a lower price on "essentially" the same product, and 2) make more profit on the sale.

In the supermarket business, which runs on razor-thin margins, that can make a big difference in a manager's bonus package.

They can, however, overdo it. My suggestion is, make your complaint known to somebody who can make a difference.

.

I believe THAT is the title of the first chapter in the Trader Joe's manual.

I like LOL butter. I buy it all the time. I also bet neither of us could pick it out in a blind taste test vs another brand of butter. And I definitely think you couldn't pick it out once baked into a dish. Of course you will say I'm wrong, but have you done a blind test on it. After all - it's BUTTER.

But what happens if you use Hispanic butter in an Italian recipe? Will the butter and the pasta not be able to talk to each other?
