Can anyone tell me what the current enrollment is at Mills Elementary in SW Austin? The number I am finding is 1099, but I think that number is a little out of date, and I'm wondering if it's pre-Baldwin or post-Baldwin (the new elementary out in Meridian that caused rezoning a year or two ago). Also, I'm wondering how many kindergarten classes they have this year?

If you have a student at Mills, how do you like it? I am concerned about the overcrowding issue, but other than that I am reading good things in the online reviews.

If anyone could help me out with this I would appreciate it! Thanks!

A quick phone call to the main office of the school should answer your first two questions. I'm sure they will be glad to help and will have the most accurate answers.

The last I heard (which was about a year ago) was that Mills was 900-something. It was still the most over-enrolled in the district (percent-wise) and I think was the largest Elementary in the district.

That said, everyone I know with kids there thinks they do a good job.

Here http://www.trulia.com/schools/TX-Aus...entary_School/ lists the enrollment as 1023, but does not cite a reference or date. The 900 number I mentioned above might have been a projected number, as well, but not sure. I think the last informative article I saw about it was in the Oak Hill Gazette some year or so ago.

I hear great things about Mills. However, I did want to point out, if it matters to you, that they moved in the rankings this year from Exemplary to Recognized. Personally, I don't think that would deter me from the school, but I know a lot of people get hung up on ratings.

OK, I just called the school, and the enrollment is 892! I guess that number was pre-Baldwin after all. They also have 6 kinder classes.

I'm not worried about the whole exemplary/recognized thing in this case. I know Mills is a good school, and it's common for them to go back and forth year to year. If a school were recognized or worse every year, and never hit exemplary, that would be a different story.

Mills is a great school, and the rezoning reduced the populations considerably. It might even go down more because some kids were grandfathered in with siblings, etc. From all I can see, seems like parents are highly involved and it's a really good school - probably one of the the best elementary schools in south/ southwest Austin.
