Hi all - dh and I spent a considerable amount of time researching and visiting SW neighborhoods (we are currently in Avery Ranch but want to move closer to the city and like the SW area) and I think we have it narrowed down to the Villages at Western Oaks/Legend Oaks/north section of Circle C area. The 2 elementary schools that the neighborhoods we like most are zoned for are Mills and Patton - on paper they seem pretty equal. Any personal experiences/feedback?

Thanks!

I think they are both very good elementary schools, and I don't think I would let one or the other make or break a deal on a house you are interested in. The area we currently live in feeds into Mills, the Clint Small, then Bowie. Some people very close will end up with Patton and/or Austin High. I have not heard one bad thing from our neighbors about Patton or Mills. Of course, our 'oldest' is 3 months old, so it will be a while before we have personal experience .

Thanks Trainwreck! We don't have a particular house in mind at this point, but I want to make sure that there isn't a compelling reason to focus our search in one area of the neighborhood over the other. I actually was just chatting with a student yesterday (I work at UT) who went to Austin HS but has a ton of friends at Bowie HS, and she was raving about both - it was really nice to hear.

I think I preferred the neighborhood that feeds into Mills slightly more than the area around Patton, but I liked both, and depending on what house we find, could easily choose either.

The main advantage to Mill might be a higher likelyhood of being able to walk from your home in Legend Oaks. Patton is north of Williams Cannon and walkable only if you live in Westcreek. Both are well regarded by parents though.

Interestingly enough, there is an ad for Avery Ranch running on the radio now. The basic idea of the commercial is that you will never have to leave the neighborhood anymore...there are schools, stores, restaurants, etc. right there.... Guess they assume you work there, too .

Thanks Steve - yes, we loved the neighborhoods right around Mills, thinking it seemed more "community like" because of the elementary school right there.

Trainwreck - lol. I just got back after being in Rhode Island for 2 days (family funeral) so I haven't heard the ads yet, but that's pretty funny. There isn't even a grocery store in Avery Ranch - I can't imagine how you would never leave!

Call and ask but pretty much all pre-K in AISD and the surrounding districts as well is only available to low-income, second language, military families etc. It is not open enrollment for all 4 years old.
