I'd like to get feedback on the general job climate there in Austin.

I currently live in Connecticut where the opportunities are very limited so I have decided to relocate to another state--and Texas overall looks good in the research I've doen so far.

I have a background in video production and a little bit of web design and project management--but I'm willing to do other things to make ends meet, initially. Any comments on this topic welcome. Please don't pull any punches.

Thanks

DFB

It's tight. UT generates new grads every year. Based on the interviews I have been on, any job that pays north of 35K that isn't too specialized will receive around 100 applicants.

I don't want to comment on the job market as a whole, but I will tell you what I did today.

Today I conducted 8 interviews for a temp position in my office. The temp would work underneath me and help me work thru the backlog of paperwork I have in my office.

Every interviewee was sent to us by a temp agency.

Every interviewee had a Bachelor's degree or higher, and at least 8 years of experience in my field. They were all dressed better than me too, which I think adds insult to injury. One gentleman had 4 years of military experience in addition to his bachelor's and 12 years of experience in my field.

And he was applying for a temp position for what is basically scut paperwork in my office that didn't require a high school diploma to understand.

And he was GRATEFUL for the interview.

That is what I did today. And I am not going to lie, it scared the hell out of me.

We at Electronic Arts are hiring and can't find good people. We need Java developers and other IT professionals. Checkout jobs.EA.com and search in Austin and let me know if you qualify.
