Hi folks!

I'm moving to Austin on June 1st and currently packing my house here in Northern New Jersey. I'm wondering how many jackets, sweaters and sweatshirts one might need while living in the warm Austin climate. I'm assuming no one really needs to own several down jackets? Furthermore, do I need to bring my feather down duvet blankets?

I can't wait to get rid of all these bulky clothes and heavy blankets!

Thanks in advance,
Lisa

Down jackets, no. We only rarely get below freezing. Down blankets? Sure, why not. Cut down on your heating costs by using blankets to keep warm.

I own a few lighter jackets and one heavier wool coat for the 40s and low 50s.

As for sweaters, we still get below 60 during winter. I keep a few, but I prefer to layer with cardigans over short sleeve shirts. I work in a freezing cold office, so the cardigans are worn year round.

I own (one) light jacket. If it gets cold, I'm usually wearing a sweater underneath. If it gets below freezing, I have (one) scarf.

This was my first winter here, so no expert. I did wear my down jacket for about a week here when it got below freezing and we had a light snow. But most of the winter I wore a heavier sweater or light jacket most of the time. We do have a down blanket on our bed, but we really only used it during the winter months here which don't last very long. Bottom line is in Austin the warm weather goes on for months and the winter weather is for a very short time frame and you really don't need much in the form of winter clothing.

I own quite a few sweaters, but they are fairly lightweight and mosty fashionable, not functional. As far as a "heavy" coat, I own one. I rarely wear it, though, and would be ashamed to admit just how old it is now! Welcome to Austin!

I own one coat that I just bought b/c I was taking a trip to NYC and needed a jacket. I have yet to wear it in Austin. I own a few windbreakers for when it rains or gets a little cool. But mostly, when it's cold in Austin, I just wear long sleeve shirts.

Bring your down blankets just b/c they are super comfortable. Bring a nice garment/blanket bag for them though, as it is to hot to use a down comforter about 9 months out of the year.

I don't own any sweaters, but I used to, and they were all very light and more "fashionable" then warm.

Your wardrobe needs are fashioned by your lifestyle. While in Austin, do you plan on being outdoors much from November thru February? Or are you just planning on going from a heated house, to a heater car, to a heated office? If you plan on being outdoors a lot, get a nice water proof jacket. If not, don't bother.

You'll need them for sure.

You will use them, but not much.
Got down to 19 degrees here last year (perhaps lower in parts)
That was like for a week though

My Denim jacket gets the most use

I have one pullover from Lands End and that's is about it. Oh a sweat jacket. Use the sweat jacket a lot when going indoors to movies and the likes cause A/c is set low.

:-)

Honestly, that's where my jacket gets the most use,
when I go to a restaurant that keeps the AC on high

The heaviest jacket I use is my leather jacket. It is actually pretty dang warm, and in colder snaps (like the unusually cold one this past winter) I just add an extra layer or two underneath.
