If you got the option which one would you chose? Which one is considered to be safe and cool?

There are benefits to both -- depends on where your work will be located. If you aren't employed and are looking, there seem to be more work options North of the city. At least for me anyway...

For the "cool" factor, if you go out to the burbs in either direction, you don't have much "cool". I find North Central equivilant to just south of the river. South Austin does have the rep for being cooler though... I think because of all the concentration of locally owned businesses. Up north you have more national chain type establishments.

South Austin. Just one word. Vibe.

There is the age-old debate of the yuppies (North) vs the bubbas (South).

I think that used to be the case but not any more.

My Burnet Road neighborhood is changing, but I think the vibe is more Austin quirk than South Congress or other places just south of the river are now. There are so many newcomers there that it's just turned into a parody of itself. Funkiness is just something to be bought, sold and traded for money or coolness points in South Austin.

North Central areas like Burnet and North Loop are more untouched and weirder to me, at least now.

I'd pick the one closest to work. But if I had the choice, I'd pick South.

South.

The age-old debate between Bubbas (south) vs Yuppies (north) has changed. The south side is becoming a mix of hipster/yuppy with the "bubbas" being increasingly pushed out into Hays county. I wasn't around during the 80's when north was yuppy territory, but it doesn't appear that way anymore.

South Austin. North is Dallas lite.
