But, to OP, I like both, but have lived and stayed mostly north. In S Austin I am a fan of Black Sheep and SoCo, but haven't seen a lot of places there. Way up north is The Domain (I'm meh on it), then various craft breweries within the general area. I don't think The Domain area is that "weird", unless you want to count paunchy hipsters wearing skinny jeans and superhero t-shirts which hug their bellies. I like the N Loop and think it's still a cool area, ditto with Burnet in that general area (Little Longhorn Saloon is my go-to pick for a fun dive bar experience). I do like the Barton Springs area, but don't make it down there much. But overall, I think as others said, N and S Austin are both changing a lot, so it's hard to say which side is "better", IMHO.

Honestly, there are safe and desirable communities in both north and south Austin. The most traditionally funky/cool/weird/Old Austin vibe will be just south of downtown (So. Congress, So. First, So. Lamar).
