My wife and I are moving to Austin in the next month, and I will be working from home. I will need a very reliable, very fast internet connection for lots of VPN, video conferencing, Ooma, transferring large files, etc.

It doesn't look like FiOS has come to Austin yet, sadly.

Recommendations?

THANKS!

We live in SW Austin and have TWC for cable and internet (road runner). I am a high VPN user and have been really happy with TWC till now.

Before moving to SW, we lived up north and had U-Verse for 8 months. According my personal experience

1) TWC is better for internet. U-Verse was good, but TWC is better. With U-Verse we had occasional blackouts when Internet didn't work for couple hours. But eventually it was fixed and worked fine. Regarding speed, I always feel that TWC's 6 Mbps is faster than U-Verse's 6 Mbps. If you are heavy VPN user I would definitely recommend road runner which gets around 14-15 Mbps.

2) Cable navigation is better in U-Verse. HD Channels are simply 1xxx where xxx is channel number for standard definition. TWC doesn't have any co-relation.
TWC response time browsing cable guide is quite slow compared to U-Verse.

Thanks, Infoseeker, for the comparison. I'd always wondered.

Roadrunner Wideband, 50Mbps, (if available in your area) or RR Extreme(20Mbps)/Turbo(15Mbps). You'll need to get at least Turbo since it has 2Mbps upload while the tiers below it only have 512 or something ridiculous.

So, it's sounding like RoadRunner is my best option. Is AT&T U-Verse the only other option?

Also, I don't have to worry about any nasty download/upload caps, right?

ATT will have caps within weeks, TWC doesn't have any at the moment or hasn't said they plan to.
