We have family visiting (again). Sure, we'll do all of the must-do's (again), but I want to take this opportunity to experience something new.

Anything worthwhile within 2 hours of Northwest & West of Austin? I always wanted to go exploring out there.

Within 2 hours? So you mean outside of town. Well, Enchanted Rock and the LBJ Ranch National Park are west (but not NW) and within 2 hours drive. The LBJ Ranch has tours and lots of stuff to look at. You've got the highland lakes, too (Travis of course, LBJ and Buchanan).

There are a variety of wineries all over the NW, W, and SW directions. Check the Texas Wine Trail Map: Texas Hill Country Wineries - Texas Wine Trail - Trail Map (http://www.texaswinetrail.com/map.html - broken link)

Maybe stop at Cooper's BBQ in Llano. It's not worth the trip on it's own, but if you are going to some of the lakes or wineries, maybe stop by for some famous BBQ.

Make sure to see how the colors are before going out, but I hear Lost Maples State Park is gorgeous (maybe 2 hours southwest of Austin?). Pedernales Falls State Park is pretty cool too, but I'm guessing the water would be too cold by now. If you're in Marble Falls, hit up Bluebonnet Cafe.

Fredricksburg is a nice little artsy town about an hour and a half directly west of Austin.

Those are all great places. I recommend them too.

Oh! And there's usually something going on at the Cedar Park Center, which I guess is about a 30 minute drive or so from Downtown, depending on traffic. The Texas Stars hockey team plays there, as do the Austin Toros basketball team. Some decent musical acts come through there, and I believe sometime early next year Cirque du Soleil is going to be performing there! Other than that, not a whole hell of a lot to do in CP, but it's not a terribly long drive and if there's a show y'all like there, it's a pretty good facility.

If you like caves, Longhorn Caverns in Marble Falls is worth a visit. It is different from most caves, as it was carved by an underground river. It also has interesting human history.
