Yes, I actually know a guy that lives here, but is from Montana that says "Howdy" a lot. I also occasionally see people write it as a greeting in E-mails. Of course "y'all" is probably the most widely used word here that differs from other places. Otherwise, it's normally difficult to detect any accent at all from a native Austinite.

Maybe Big Texas Hair came from women living in coastal areas. I have natural curly hair and Houston weather is much worse. Tell your wife she isn’t alone. I have a cure all for it, but she will have to email me to help with the curls. As far as saying howdy, Go for it, I say Hey! all the time. I have lived in Texas for almost all my life so I think I have heard, hey, howdy, hello and howdy and once a YO.
