Thanks Hoffdano- She is almost 11 and has been swimming 5 days/wk for 1.5-ish hours per day since September (City of Austin summer leagues for a couple of years before TXLA). So far she is swimming with all "B" and "BB" times. She seems to be developing some habits that don't serve her well (ex- not pulling all the way through her freestyle, which is resulting in more vertical "bobbing" and less strength in forward propulsion). She is really into it, and we (as former swimmers) want to encourage her and also provide some help to correct the stroke issues now before they really become habit. Any thoughts? We chose TXLA because of the later workouts, since both parents work and can't get her to the earlier club workouts. BTW, we watched the Austin Elite team several times this summer and were very impressed with the coaching and personal attention the kids were getting. Wish they worked out later than 3:30!

Funny that you mention AES. That is who I was going to suggest. Nate O'Brien is an excellent coach and his program is small enough to give you the attention your child deserves. Frankly, I think TXLA is a program good only for very fast and mature swimmers. For newer swimmers who do not yet shine, TXLA is typically inattentive. Their reputation is in some ways earned from Eddie Reese's swimmers, not the kids that really form the bulk of TXLA.

Perhaps you can reach out to Nate and ask him for help or advice.

Default re: Swimming for 8th grader

My 8th grader still wants to do swimming and she could be a very strong swimmer. But she's been diagnosed w/migraines and when we tried the Westlake one, she developed a migraine on the first practice. they worked her too hard on the very first day. But its been hard to get her back into a sport ever since she got in middle school and w/the migraines. She LOVES swimming, but she didn't want to go back to the westlake one cause there were way too many kids in one class. Are there any smaller swimming groups? She was SO successful at soccer and swimming thru the YMCA up thru 6th grade. Just can't find something that fits for her now. And of course now she's fearful the migraine will come on badly if she excercises. Tough spot but want to find a smaller group. Any suggestions?? Thx!

What team are you referring to? Lost Creek, Austin Elite, West Austin or some other club?

I think it was West Austin. It was way out on Bee Caves Rd past 360.

I don't think West Austin Athletic Club (on Bee Caves about halfway between 360 and 71) would be considered Westlake by anyone.

Weiss and Weiss is located in Rollingwood.

Lost Creek Aquatic Club is in the Lost Creek subdivision.
