Every time I am in Austin near 6th and Lamar I have always noticed a little cafe across the street from Book People on Lamar. Has anyone eaten there? It looks really old, like an old diner. It has a classic store front look but I think it's just one story.

You are most likely thinking about the old G&S Steakhouse, now renovated and renamed the Counter Cafe. I haven't been there yet but I'd like to try it.

That's cool. I looked it up online.

I think the older place sounded more like what I pictured it to be. But at least it sounds like they are still using the place as a similar kind of cafe.

It's Counter Cafe and it's the bomb! We couldn't remember the name just now, but thanks to your post, now we know. They make excellent home made biscuits. Can't go wrong!

You are probably talking about Counter Cafe, as others have mentioned. But the description also applies to 24 Diner. Both are excellent.

I was actually looking at both on line this morning for a late lunch with visiting niece; but we went to an old standby...Z Tejas...tasty as always.

BTW...I wonder if the OP figured it out in the SEVEN YEARS since their post

If it's the 24 Diner next to Waterloo the food is good.

Both Counter and 24 are excellent - hidden gems. Also visit Waterloo Records and support a local artist.

The biscuits and gravy at Counter Cafe are amazing. Double up on the sausage.
