Does anyone know what used to be on the northeast corner of this intersection. The last time I was there in Austin it was still the multi-level bookstore and the Whole Foods.

What was there before that? Thanks.

Boy, that's a LONG time ago! Going to have to dig around in my memory. I remember when Whole Foods moved there, and then BookPeople (formerly Grok Books) moved there (was most upset because Brodie Oaks, where they moved from, was just around the corner). I'm thinking an auto dealership or something like that.

Yea I think it was a Chevy dealership back in the day.

Yes, pretty sure it was Capitol Chevrolet way back.

Thanks. There is a shot of the area in the movie "Slacker" which was filmed in 1989. It's taken from the tiny little diner across the street. But it's hard to tell exactly what I'm looking at because I wasn't sure how far the diner was from the corner. There is definitely an auto dealership in the shot.

It was Capital Chevrolet. And since you're talking about the movie, the G&M Diner is also gone. It's been replaced by some foo-foo restaurant.

The G&M had one of the best omellettes in town. Thank goodness for Kirby Lane and the Magnolia cafes.

You can still get a great plate of catfish at the Shoal Creek saloon.

I loved G&M. Preferred the original down on the drag, both for food and for entertainment value, but the diner was great, too.

It WAS Chevy dealership now that I think of it. I remember heading down to 6th St. as a poor college kid and seeing the Corvettes on display.

yeah, it's weird that it wasn't long ago there were several dealerships on 6th street east of lamar...and there were actually warehouses in the warehouse district.

And you could rent a cement mixer from Austin Rentall just East of Capital Chevrolet and purchase locks at Cothran's.

I hope Miller's Blueprint stays downtown. It's a cool place and I've used them from drawing reproductions and engineering supplies for years.
