We're originally from Richmond, Virgina and are planning on moving to the Augusta area. We have chosen the cities of Thomson & Grovetown. I would appreciate any information on what city would be the best. When it comes to - safety, stuff to do, schools, commute time, & raising small children. Thanks.

The city of Thomson sounds like a lovely place to live. How long is the commute from Thomson to Augusta?

I would think Grovetown has a little lead when it comes to new construction. One reason its slightly closer to the city. But Thomson has alot going on as well. The commute to Augusta. Thomson 35-40 mins. Grovetown 20-25 minutes.

Given the choice of Grovetown or Thomson. Thomson would win hands down! The majority of Grovetown is military due to the proximity to Ft Gordon gate 2. Not to mention it's being over taken by illegals and the city of Grovetown, especially their dept of of public safety (their version of the police) is a joke! The schools rank the lowest in Columbia County as well. There are a bunch of new developements being thrown up, but all the homes are literally piled on top of each other and are pretty much spec homes. Chamblin Rd has a lot of new developments being built, but why would you want to be right on top of the closed landfill? and polluted Euchee Creek YUCK!

I say find you a nice piece of land or large lot in McDuffie county and get a reputable builder to build you a nice home. The drive isn't so bad actually if you stay in the area closest to Washington Rd/1-20- Stagecoach Rd area or going towards Willkes county (Washington, GA) There were some very nice new houses on a side road(sorry can't remember the name of it) close to Belle Meade subdivsion which is a very nice older, established subdivision.

As far as things to do, you will most likely have to come to Augusta. Martinez/Evans for all that. Thomson's biggest store is the Super Wal-mart! for now at least.

You can also check out homes in the MLS by going to http://www.mlsaugusta.com

With Doctor's Hospital being the destination, Grovetown is by far the more convenient choice, with a much smaller commute time. Grovetown is also a smaller commute to shops and restaurants and parks and trails and other weekend activities. It is growing more than Thomson and thus has really good options in housing, especially newer housing.

Don't let the "schools rank lowest in Columbia County" thing fool you either. Columbia County ranks the highest in the entire region because most of Columbia County zones housing so that mainly middle and upper class residents live there, and the parents of those kids typically hold them more responsible for doing the work and can participate in tutoring them since they are typically professionals themselves. Grovetown has more of the rural lower income people than, say, Evans, which ultimately results in lower scores than Evans, but good scores nonetheless, due to the strong contingent of middle class suburbanites. It's not the inner city with inner city thugs. Not by a long shot. It's still the suburbs, and a child can do just as well at that school as at any school in Evans. Obviously if that's all you were basing the decision on, you'd be asking about Evans and not about either Grovetown or Thomson, so I won't belabor the point any further.

Go for Grovetown if you want the benefit of the suburbs but access to activities. Go for Thomson if you just flat out prefer a more rural remote location and don't mind the drive that goes with it.

Grovetown does have some ghetto area's in the city. And obviously some nice neighborhood's of course. There bulding new homes daily in Grovetown. But there are poor area's and lower middle class in part's of the city.
