My job might transfer me to Lagrange, GA and I am looking for a suburb of Atlanta with: great schools, low crime, great place to raise a family and a reasonable commute to Lagrange. I prefer to live closer to Atlanta versus Lagrange since I am from a big city (Houston).

From research I have done on on Sterlings BestPlaces, CNN Money, Relocate America, and Greatschools.org, it appears that Peachtree City or Newnan are great places to raise a family. My only concern is the potentially long commute which would not be so bad if I get in on a carpool.

Any thoughts of these or other places would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure you are going to find a carpool from P'tree City or Newnan to LaGrange. I could be wrong.

P'tree City and Newnan are pretty far from Atlanta. I am not sure that is going to give you your city fix.

I think living in Peachtree City or Newnan and working in LaGrange is definitely doable/workable--not too bad at all.

I understand what you want: you at least want to live in a suburban area that is part of a major metropolis/big city--with all of the corresponding big-city suburb conveniences. You'll find this in Peachtree City and Newnan.

A good friend of my parents have done exactly what you are asking. He lives in Peachtree City, and works in LaGrange. I'm honestly not sure how long it takes him, however, he does it everyday, so it is doable.

Growing up in the area, I must say at least give LaGrange a chance. Troup County schools are good and provide an excellent education, LaGrange has good retail and restaurants, affordable housing. When you need the 'big city', it is but an hour's drive and coming from the southern side with less traffic, can be as quick a drive to the airport, sometimes even less, than going from northern suburbs.

If it doesn't suit you, then Newnan would be a good first choice as it is more convenient to 85, then would rate Peachtree City next best option simply that there is a good trek to get to the interstate.

When I was growing up in the area in the 70s, LaGrange was considered more cosmopolitan than either Newnan or Peachtree City. That's what suburban sprawl can do for an area's reputation, lol

Another area to look at is South Fulton / Sandtown (Anything south of Camp Creek Parkway outside 285). Closer to Atlanta, but longer commute each day to Lagrange. It's still a reverse commute, so it could be worse.
