Let's say you win the lottery. Say, $5 million after taxes. (Enough to put just about anywhere within reach, but not Donald-Trump ultrarich). But that would give you $250,000 a year if you earned 5% interest. That puts almost anywhere on the globe within reach.

Where would you like to live? Here in Atlanta? Another place in Georgia? Another state? Another country?

In the U.S., I'd give serious consideration to Austin, Texas, maybe in house out in Hill Country not too far from town. I'd also be very tempted to move somewhere such as Athens, Ga.; Chapel Hill, N.C.; Charlottesville, Va. I also like Palm Springs, Calif., a lot. I have a fondness for smaller cities.

Outside of the U.S., some Italian, Portuguese or Spanish town would be nice. Maybe Estoril, outside of Lisbon. I've never been to Switzerland, and I'm not sure how far even $250,000 would stretch, but Bern or some such place would have some appeal.

My choices outside the US would be:

Florence, Italy
Aix-en-Provence, France
Bergen, Norway
Capetown, South Africa
Prague, Czech Republic (husband has an apartment there)
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Tuckers Town, Bermuda*

In the US:

Santa Barbara, CA*
Santa Fe, NM*
St Simons/Sea Islands, GA*
Hamptons/Montauk, LI, NY*

*250M annually might not cut it, though.

Some nice choices. I've heard great things about San Miguel de Allende. And right now, you'd live like royalty on $250,000 in Argentina! Maybe a place near the Andes ...

I like New Mexico a lot, too. We liked Las Cruces a lot. And gosh, St. Simons would be NICE!

My dad and stepmother spend the winter every year with another couple in SMdA...they have a live in housekeeper that is an amazing cook. You really can live like royalty there affordably. And it is charming.

Here's an idea: Key Largo in winter; St. Simons in spring; Montreal in summer; Asheville in the fall!

I'd probably have multiple homes in various areas with combinations of ski mountains, lakes, ocean beach, and good horseback riding areas, plus a city home or two. I'd also have homes in both snowy and non-snowy climates. I'd have homes in every continent.

I would have a summer condo in Vail, CO (yes, in the summer) and a winter home on Maui.
