Wer'e considering a move to Fayette County, and my husband will be working in downtown Atlanta. I've been watching the trffic cameras and no matter when I look - during am or pm rush hour - it seems that traffic doesn't really get too bad until 85 and 75 merge. Would that be about right? My husband is saying he's happy to have a drive in exchange for a really good school system, but I want to be sure we know what we're getting into.

Yes, many humans use 85 North in the a.m. and 85 South in the p.m. It backs up to about Newnan...I work off the Fairburn-Peachtree City exit and snicker the entire time I'm driving 70 mph. It varies in intensity like anywhere else you might commute, but it will always at least be slow...if not stop and go. That side of town is exploding in residential construction and population. It will only get worse.

I have to be at the airport by 0700, and there's rarely traffic enough to slow me down. I leave there at 1600 and again, rarely encounter traffic. It's probably the least congested interstate in the metro area

Where's he working and can he take mass transit? Work off-hours?

Oh, my bad. There is NO traffic on 85 at rush hour. Traffic on that side of town isn't congested at all. I must have been driving on another highway for the past 7 years.

My husband will be working off Courtland downtown - so he'll be driving ALL the way from Peachtree City to there everyday. I only ask about the traffic because every time I check the cameras, the traffic seems reasonable. Or at least what I would expect for a large city. But I don't know the area and I have no frame of reference.

As far as using Marta, I had kind of crossed that off the list because it seems like, from looking at the map, the stations are quite a distance from where we'd live. I'd love it if that could work out - and I think I could sell him on it if the station is in a relatively safe area and the train is dependable.

85 is probably the least congested freeway in the city, but you're still going to experience back ups and there is a lot of growth down there which is just going to make it worse.. Commuting into Atlanta from anywhere is not a fun experience. There are a couple of mass transit options for your husband. He could either drive up to the College Park Marta Station and take the train in from there, or drive to Newnan and take the GRTA express bus from there. It stops at Five Points and Civic Center Station. Either one is a couple of blocks off Courtland. The College Park Marta Station is safe, just off the freeway. Marta experiences delays on occasion but it is reliable for the most part.

like I said, from the airport to Newnan, at the hours I listed, there is not enough traffic to slow me down. I've only encountered 2 jams from wrecks, and I still wasn't late for work

past the airport is a different story

Default Commute from Peachtree City

I have lived in Peachtree City for about 10 years and the commute downtown is reasonable compared with any of the Atlanta suburbs. I always get home in time to log on to www.PeachtreeYardSales.com and see what my neighbors have for sale.

MARTA is not a sucky solution, worth considering. The closest station is about the same drive as to Hartfield, and the parking lot safe (one half is near the police encampment.) Conversely, he could drive to Newnan and grab the Greyhound sized bus they have running commuters straight to downtown, and drive even less everyday!
