If the MMIP site is right then they haven't finalized the designs yet. There's even one for three reversible lanes, all in the same direction, and two separate BRT lanes, one in each direction.

They should put all four lanes together and separate them like this:

Boston did this on one of their interstates everyday, I-93.

I would think the smallest sliver on each side would be the extent of the land.

I expect a lot of sound walls will be built.

I remember the Coronado Bridge in San Diego having this, mostly for the Navy base traffic.

I wouldn't be opposed to implementing that even on existing highways, I-85 north of I-285 could probably use an extra two lanes each way at the rush hours. I-20 both directions could use one, GA-400 could use at least one if not two.

Probably unlikely. It would be way too far in the future, but it looks like they a considering dedicated bus lanes, /BRT.

This gives me hope, that BRT could be a part of 285 Express Lane project
Quote:
The first phase of a feasibility study being prepared for the group of mayors by engineering consultant Kimley Horn shows bus-rapid transit could be provided across the three counties and seven cities located along the Top End for $450 million to $480 million, while a rail line would cost about $4 billion. The BRT line would be routed along the toll lanes the Georgia Department of Transportation is planning to build on I-285, significantly reducing right-of-way acquisition costs.

Shouldn't the listed cost of the BRT include the cost of the express lanes as a whole, since without the lanes it wouldn't exist?

Its better than nothing but it bugs me that they're shuddering over $4 Billion for a rail line while spending over $11 Billion for these lanes. I mean I know that the funds are from altogether different sources but it still just feels like a mindset issue more than a financial one.

Depends on who is paying for it. Not sure how that is divided out but if its MARTA that is paying for it, then no... because GDOT is providing the lanes / RoW - so for MARTA its a bargain... If it was GDOT however then the extra $450 - $480 million is practically negligible in comparison to the cost of the rest of this project.

I totally agree. If they could work together to solve the traffic that is plaguing the metro area, they'd be more efficient. I don't think it's impossible to do, but I'm sure they'd give 101 reasons why they cannot.

If GDOT is going to pay for the largest % the cost of the project, then I am all aboard the BRT bus. This could buses to transition from 400 to these lanes and connect Tucker or Cumberland to North Fulton.

Good thinking by both you and Gulch, cq.
