We passed by an old (now closed) Greyhound station a few weeks ago, I think in Birmingham. It looked like a post-apocalyptic movie set.

Savannah's 1938 art deco Greyhound Bus Terminal (closed in 1964} was in bad shape before being restored in 2014 to house THE GREY -- one of the most highly acclaimed restaurants in the nation (named No. 1 last year by Eater).

I like Savannah’s Greyhound Station. it is not a trailer like Atlanta and actually combines it with the city bus system.

I agree. Before I moved here and I rode into town from the Midwest it surprised me that it was so dirty, depressing, and substandard to be right in the middle of downtown Atlanta and a MAJOR hub for Greyhound's Southeast network. As a previous poster said, this is on Greyhound, so I think the only hope they would get some upgraded and better facilities if the proposed Amtrak/MARTA/ATL station ever comes to fruition.

I doubt it.

Why in tarnation can't a big city like Atlanta come up with a decent bus station?

If we skipped some of those huge bonuses, lip sync contests, trips around the world, steak dinners, Super Bowl junkets, etc., etc., we could just about cover the cost.

I use to ride the Greyhound Bus quite a bit. In 1972 I took a Greyhound from Denver to Indianapolis. I was on that bus for 32 hours. I think we stopped at every town between Denver and Indianapolis along Interstate 70 that had a population of more than 1000 people. I couldn't sleep on the bus. I think that was the tiredest I ever been in my life. Back in the 80's, I took the bus several times from Austin to Dallas and back to Austin and 3 or 4 times from Austin to Houston and back to Austin. Every Greyhound Bus station I was ever at always looked raggedy. I never been to a bus station that was as nice as an airport. Alot of these bus stations aren't good places to hang around. There's some rough characters around the bus stations. It's a different kind of crowd than what you find at the airport.

I have ONLY ridden Greyhound once, from the old "spur" Hapeville station to Panama City Beach, back in the early 1990's: it was a very surreal experience. I left at dusk and rode over night, mostly down U.S. 19, if I remember correctly, and EVERY station, at least to 18 year old me, seemed to be on the wrong side of EVERYWHERE. I kept dozing off, and waking up, bleary eyed Griffin/ Thomaston/ Albany/ then down I-10 looking at a very random cross section of humanity young folks, elderly, and, yes, some scary looking people, too. Never got off the bus until I reached my destination; none of the stations, including my destination, looked too inviting even almost 25 years ago. Never have ridden Greyhound, since. I have a co-worker who regularly takes Megabus to her hometown of Miami, she claims that is MUCH nicer.

I rode Amtrak once and it was absolutely awful so I can only imagine what Greyhound is like.

My Amtrack trips (Once to New Orleans and once to Washington, D.C.) actually are wonderful memories! Both were school trips overnight (think berths and staying up with your friends and eating in the dining car like the old Glen Miller song!)

The low point of the trip was boarding here in Atlanta. Brookwood Station (once an outpost for the old Southern Railroad) became our passenger station when Terminal and Union Stations (once proudly standing Downtown in the "Gulch") were torn down in the 1970's. The stations in Washington and New Orleans (both "Union" stations if I remember) were huge happening places (the Washington Union Station even had a shopping mall over the tracks!) In comparison, Brookwood Station felt like you were departing/ arriving in Hooterville (from the old Green Acres T.V. show, NOT the restaurant chain ;0) )

Yes, I know it was 20 plus years ago, but Amtrack was FUN!
