Maybe we should require bird riders to take a brief educational course that teaches them where they can and cannot ride.

Some signage might help, too.

Again I will go back to the article I posted

“I don’t really think scooter people want to be on sidewalks, either. Sidewalks are slower, there’s a lot more obstacles going to impede their ability to enjoy and be efficient with their ride. They’re doing it so they don’t die. And when people are making [the wrong] choices so they don’t die, we’re not doing something right.”

The opportunity, she adds, doesn’t necessarily mean making more specialized lanes, or even rebranding the existing ones. It could just be opening a conversation about using road space in distinctly non-American ways—think superblocks, shared woonerf-style streets, and pedestrian-friendly space. “We could cut up streets to make safer allocations of space. What would it look like to have a grid across the street that was just for individual mobility? Think about we could save money doing that instead of fighting to take away parking or build new curbs.”
Did anyone bother to read the article?

Why not make modifications to the side street to make car driving that route slower? A lot of extreme car calming would be welcomed by residents who are tired of the car traffic cutting through, so I think there is room for some radical ideas. To me this seems like a great idea to try, but when I advocated it at a neighborhood traffic calming meeting a few years ago the cycling advocates were very unhappy.

Yes, good article, but do the bird people know it's dangerous for them to go zipping down the sidewalks?

I still like the idea of moving cyclists and bird riders to the quieter side streets.

I'd rather just improve all streets to make it safer for all modes of transportation.

Narrowing lanes and adding striping for bike lanes are minimal costs

Even more so when they are coordinated with resurfacing projects that the locals were going to have to spend money on anyway.
