"Resurgens Atlanta." The city motto as the soccer team name. I like.

Really, any combination of "Resurgens FC," etc. would be better than any of these:

Sorry, those all sound too gimmicky and not nearly as grand. "Atlanta Depot"? Like a play on "Home Depot"??

I guess I'm the only one with accident prone kids, but this is what I first thought of:

Resurgens Orthopaedics

You have to put Atlanta in there, because people from elsewhere will have to figure out where their home is. Resurgens is a good choice. They can do without FC, though. Seems a little gimmicky.

eh. i like the idea but are you seriously saying 'resurgens' rolls off the tongue better than 'phoenix'??

i think it might be neat if, instead of creating an arbitrary mascot, they just announce the team colours and call the team Atlanta FC, and over time the fans will come up with their own chants and legends and whatnot.

Of course the name "Atlanta Depot" wasn't placed there for intelligent consideration or support..the idea was to make you THINK. Ha !

As a former professional player, I know the effect of bad or overly politicized nomenclature for a team. You don't want to play on a dumb sounding squad .

Back in the day, we thought the "New York Cosmos" and the "Tampa Bay Rowdies" were very strange names.

Cosmos ???

Okay, but you have to have a label that most ordinary people on the street (not elistist) can understand and identify with.

You don't want people to have to think that hard. What's on The City of Atlanta's official seal, is NOT where to start for the masses.

Soccer is a game for the masses, always has been ....WORLDWIDE. For anyone to play. Let's not place it in the elistist "camp" like other great sports such as Golf or Tennis.

This game is about a team sport for "everyman".

Overwrought nomenclature doesn't elevate the proliferation and future acceptance of the sport. The support and appeal will come from "bottom up", not "top down".

It's the PEOPLE of a city/region/state/country that it must appeal to. The PEOPLE of Atlanta are the supporters and targeted market, NOT Madison Avenue, or ESPN in the broadcast booth.

Let's not "fundamentally transform" the worldwide stature of "football" (true football) here in the United States into something that is unrecognizable to billions elsewhere, because of our penchant for assertion that "Americans don't like soccer".....or that "Americans will never watch soccer".

That's rubbish. First and foremost, the Face of America is changing and has always "changed". The face of ATLANTA GEORGIA has changed and shall continue to change.

Do you think the face (i.e. culture, etc) of NYC has changed? How about Miami ? Houston ?
Los Angeles ?

That's what you have to focus on...the people...now and in the future. They will make you or break you. They alone will make you successful.

Calling ourselves 'Phoenix' anything will probably get confusing if/when Phoenix, AZ gets an MLS team.

Additionally :

ATLANTA is not populated with a plethora of white AngloSaxon Protestants . It's not a WASPy town. It's chocked full of non-whites of many stripes.
Support for a successful franchise lies in broad and deep support in these communities, so go ask a bunch a black, brown and yellow sports-minded fans to get some valuable feedback....not some pinheaded, Johnny-come-lately-to-the-soccer-party "hipster" and "geek".

In other words, look at your demographics and audience in the community itself. That's where the pride and support is going to come from. Get THESE people involved early. Turn them into
rabid fans. Madison Avenue will take care of itself.

Of course you're correct. The name would "connote" some sort of affinity to another City ! Why on earth would you do that ?? because it "sounds good" ?? it might indeed, but it dumber than a box of rocks if you're promoting support for The City of Atlanta Georgia and the state.

Then they shouldn't have named their city after our city's symbol!
