Toco Hill(s) got its name from being the northern (top) end of development of DeKalb County at the the time.

Top of the County...Toco Hill(s).

I think lastminutemom (or was it LD?) posted this fact here on city-data way back when.

Those of you (not LovinDecatur) even having the audacity to question why hill or hills would be a part of any neighborhood or city name in Metro Atlanta must be bed-ridden/homebound...or blind.

Great info, always wondered what 'Toco' meant. I like its post-modern kitsch aura. LaVista has always had that postwar groovy vibe to it too. But I really like names like Briarcliff, Druid Hills and Oak Grove better... ones that have more of a history.

Oh, of course -- I don't know where my brain was on that one.

However, most of the others are made up names, and I'd wager there are several other areas around the country named Druid Hills, Briarcliff, Lakeside, Lavista and Oak Grove.

Now Toco Hill, that is unique. We owe that one to Mr. Clyde Shepherd (of the the Shepherd Spinal Center and many other charities and enterprises around the city).

What I'm trying to understand is why so many Atlanta neighborhoods wanting to break and to become their own cities. Atlanta is turning into ancient Greece and will be full of a bunch of city-states lol.

LHS actually did have a lake abutting the rear of their property in the beginning. The lake's name eludes me, but it was drained years ago for some reason.

Clyde Jr still owns and manages part of Toco Hill. Its a peculiar arrangement; I believe he owns the part that starts at the GA DOL and works its say up to Pikes. The lower part is owned by another LLC.
Still not sure when people started referring to Toco as a community. The neighborhoods that surround it are North Decatur, Mason Woods, Victoria Estates, Biltmore Estates, Merry Hills, Briarcliff Heights and Berkeley Hills.

I agree, although I don't think our hills are particularly noted for their druids!

Of course that doesn't mean we Americans don't like the name. The place name website says there are Druid Hills in North Carolina, Florida, Maryland, Kentucky, Alabama, Virginia, Tennessee and Nebraska.

Nonetheless I'd put money on our Druid Hills being the best.

Yes--I remember this information was given on here before (it was probably you way back when).

At least there are a few lakes/ponds that are still fairly close to the school...

That is interesting, LD, I did not know who currently owns the center.

It is really popping these days. I was over there recently and you couldn't even find a parking place.

The Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve is a hidden gem, too. The folks in DeKalb are doing some great things with trails and greenspace around Mason Mill and the whole South Peachtree watershed.
