Didn't they have a potato chip factory on Peachtree Industrial where Lowes is now?

Could be wrong, but I recall that Lay's was founded in Nashville, Tenn.

Apparently Mr. Lay may have started out in Nashville but he founded the company here in 1939.

A field trip to the potato chip factory was a treat for generations of Atlanta schoolchildren.

I've also always thought it unfortunate that Home Depot didn't choose to build a signature tower downtown way back when, but instead put its HQ in that rather unimpressive big boxy thing in Vinings (that doesn't even have the HD name or logo anywhere on it ... why is that?!)
They didn't want to pay to support the city, so they opted to be near the city as possible without paying to support it.

I LOL'd when I read this. Try googling The Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank Foundations before you make a ridiculous assertion like this; the list of organizations that have thrived under their largesse ( starting with virtually every university and hospital...ever hear of the CDC? ). Atlanta would not be the same city without it.

As much as you might desire it (for reasons unfathomable to me), its highly unlikely to happen.

Yeah, you noted an individual and a foundation, not a company who happened to locate its offices outside of the core city.

The CDC? Yes, it was created because of a malaria epidemic in this part of the country. Woodruff made a contribution to the CDC in its founding because he said that mosquitoes were a problem when he went hunting.
