Hey, when I see channel 2, 5, and 11 report that City Hall is being overwhelmed with protests and/or that the Atlanta city councilperson who governs that district is having his/her office swamped with angry calls...then I will believe that impression.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and that wheel ain't squeaking as far as I'm concerned.

Since when do news channels report on anything in Atlanta that doesn't have to do with crime? The NPU is very strong and will do anything in their power to stop this. All zoning changes have to first go thru the NPU.

Well, you might not hear the squeaking, Snake, but I imagine there's active opposition.

And yet our brother arjay says that the City Council can override any decisions from the NPU. So as far I'm concerned, the NPU is more like a placebo organization, designed to placate the townies.

Call me when the Atlanta City Council tells Wal-Mart: "Hands off Lindbergh!"

I know for a fact that the NPU has a lot of pull. NPU-O succeeded in getting a local restaurants alcohol license turned down by the mayor, until the state supreme court overturned it.

A local restaurant is not the same as a Multi-Billion dollar/Multinational Corporation capable of arranging for multiple donors to a City Council persons/Mayor's re-election coffers(or arranging for financing to his/her opponent's election coffers). Not to mention being able to hire some relatives of those politicians for well-paying "consulting" positions within that Multi-Billion dollar/Multinational Corporation.

Which happens...a lot.

Like I said before: Call me when the Atlanta City Council tells Wal-Mart: "Hands off Lindbergh!"

Several NPUs have joined forces on this one because to approve it the city council would have to throw the CDP and the zoning code under the bus. It's not clear why they would do that.

You know, Lindbergh was set aside (by law) years ago as a TOD district. That doesn't exactly jibe with a mega-parking lot big box.

Looks like the ARC is not too hot on this project.

Quote:
ARC’s analysis that was sent to the mayor Aug. 28 stated: “While there are many good aspects of this project, it does not appear to support the city of Atlanta’s 2011 Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) or MARTA (Transit Oriented Development) guidelines.”

The ARC’s letter said, “The CDP provides guidance for TODs including ‘support a complementary, well- integrated mix of land uses’ and ‘provide a range of relatively high intensity uses that are transit supportive.’”

The ARC further recommended: “The ideal development on this site would include additional residential and office uses. If the developer is not able to or interested in providing additional density on this site at this time, the development proposal should be structured in a way as to allow incremental increases in density in the future.”

I had no issue with the Walmart in Vine City because they needed it in the area. As one of the resident uber liberals I will say I know Target and the other Big Box stores are just like Walmart so I don't boycott them. That said, if they neighbors don't want a Wal-mart and it's violating zoning laws, then someone needs to find another location.
