Even tho this isn't metro Atlanta, Atlanta is still the capital of the whole state and all Atlantans should be connected to what is going on statewide no matter how much some want an iron curtain and a moat built around 285.

I read yesterday (sorry don't remember what site) that Missouri has faced a similar challenge and lost in the courts on free speech laws. It didn't have enough leg to go further up the judicial system. So precedence looks like a challenge by the KKK against the states denial would hold up as distasteful as that would seem.

This reminds me of a similar situation in Missouri, where their local KKK chapter adopted a section of an interstate highway. The state DOT tried to stop them but was stymied by a federal court. But the DOT got the last laugh: They named that very section of highway the "Rosa Parks Highway."

I think GADOT should do something similar. Put up a fight, right until the point where it's going to become an expensive legal battle, then cave in. But rename that stretch of highway after a prominent civil rights activist.

I can envision a bunch of guys in hoods picking up trash alongside the Hosea Williams Highway.

And we do that by visiting the main Georgia forum and the other city subforums, not by having every little topic that occurs in Georgia in the Atlanta-specific subforum.

Free speech means that you get to say what you want, it doesn't mean others have to approve of your speech. The state of Georgia is not restricting the free speech rights of the KKK by denying them sponsorship of a state hwy. The KKK are free to advocate for white supremacy in whatever public venues they want but others are not forced to listen or approve.

And thus the inevitable legal battles that ensue, to determine where that free speech line resides. I don't approve of it, glad the state turned them down, but Missouri lost a similar battle recently over the exact same issue as toll booth mentioned earlier.

The ACLU is gonna help the Klan in this matter, Yup, never thought I would see the days when these two groups joined forces, but hey, that's what democracy is all about!

It appears that, to some commenters here, it's more questionable to have this thread in the wrong sub-forum than it is to have the KKK creating charades in attempts to clean up the popular image of them.

That said, let them clean the highway.

Their presence and the associated signage "This Road Maintained by the Georgia White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan" (or whatever) would be a useful reminder to people on all sides of the issue.
