Airports and the Wealth of Cities - Commute - The Atlantic Cities
Moving people is more valuable than moving cargo. Explains why Atlanta, #1 passenger, has a better economy than Memphis, #1 cargo. The amount of passenger traffic has a direct correlation to the economic output, college grads, creative class, etc.

But it is important to note

It is an indicator but may or may not drive it.

I wonder if they used total passenger traffic or O&D? The busiest airport in terms of O&D is LAX.

It is no doubt that Atlanta has prospered from its airport. But one thing to consider, most other metro areas comparable in size to Atlanta have more than one commercial airport: New York (Kennedy, LaGuardia, Newark), Los Angeles (LAX, John Wayne, Ontario), Chicago (O'hare, Midway), Washington (Dulles, Reagan, Baltimore), Dallas (DFW, Love) Houston (Intercontinental, Hobby), Miami (Miami, Fort Lauderdale).

If Atlanta had a second airport, would Hartsfield (still have difficulty adding Jackson) be the world's busiest?

One thing I will add is that the Atlanta Airport still gets more passengers than most other airport systems. So more people are flying through ATL's one airport than other cities two or three airports.

World's busiest city airport systems by passenger traffic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not the world's busiest, but still WAY out of our league:

London
New York
Tokyo
Atlanta
Paris
Chicago
Los Angeles
Beijing
Shanghai
Dallas

...are the top 10.

O/D or layover might be important. But I think the really benefit you get of living near a major airport is a ridiculous huge variety of flights going everywhere all the time. Very convenient if you travel for business a lot. For instance, US Airways has 8 flights a day between Charlotte and Tampa. Delta has 13 between Atlanta and Tampa, and Airtran has another 8. There's no question that if you're planning a business trip to Tampa, you have more flexibility from Atlanta. Then start talking about going somewhere like Albuquerque, NM...Delta has three flights daily, US Airways has zero.

Because there are such massive flight options here, people who travel a lot often choose to live/work in Atlanta when they could live anywhere. The airport may employ 50,000+, but that's really where the jobs come from.

Great post (I will rep!). I knew Atlanta would still be top ten, but 4th in the world is still amazing. I didn't emphasize enough in my previous point that ATL has made a huge difference in Alanta's economy for the reasons you list, just wondered what a second airport would have done. I guess the Paulding County and Dawson County possibilities are no longer such....

Atlanta's second airport should be built in Coweta County on the site of the Newnan-Coweta Airport.
