I agree with the advice to disregard the school situation right now. Schools, especially public schools, can change a lot in five or six years. Find an area that suits your needs right now - over estimate commute time. When you come for a visit, drive around at 7:30 in the morning and 5:30 in the evening. Peachtree City to the part of the perimeter (285) would be brutal. Sorry, I can't think of a good planned community option, but many of the neighborhoods are quite accomodating.

I am moving with my mom and she is parnoid about atlanta from what she has heard I am trying to convince her it isn't really that bad.

If you're right in the town of Marietta, it still has echoes of the small town it once was (whether those echoes are sufficient to withstand the onslaught of development around it, prob depends on the person). Its surroundings, esp. non-incorporated Cobb, though are quite different.

Something similar can prob be said about Roswell, but it's even more overrun with congestion that Marietta. Stone Mtn. is another one. Don't know southern side as much, but you might look at Stockbridge, P'tree City.

Good luck w/your move.

There are many suburbs around Atlanta that make you feel that you are living in a small town. Many Master Planned Communities (neighborhood developments) can give you that feel also. Outside of Atlanta, there are some nice small towns too like Dahlonega. On the north side of Atlanta, I like Cobb, North Fulton, Cherokee, Forsyth, and Gwinnett counties. Lots of nice and safe areas to live. I don't know much about the west, east, and south sides of Atlanta, so I'm unable to share much about those. However, we have friends that live near Peachtree City on the south side, and I like that area too. It depends upon where your jobs will be. Best wishes!
