Kirkwood is a great neighborhood 3 miles east of downtown with direct connection via MARTA. Safe, with lots of younger couples and very walkable.

"best" area is highly dependent on a lot of different things. Where will you be working? What's your budget like? High-rise or neighborhood? Quiet or lively? Shopping or bars...or both?

Buckhead is by far the best area--if you can afford it. There are some highrises that are not expensive. Very safe. Upscale neighborhood.
