Two developers want to build an office building at 285 Marietta Street and are selling it as "Times Square South".

I think this is the spot

285 Marietta Street, Atlanta, GA - Google Maps

No problem with the building idea but it doesn't seem to have a "central" location to make it a "Times Square" sort of place for Atlanta. I would think it would need to border Centennial Park.

Sort of shows how Atlanta's center is shifting from Five Points and Woodruff Park over to Centennial Park.

It's not a horrible location, they are doing more with that space near Legal Seafood, Der Biergarten, Stats, and other convention hotels for people who don't want to pay Omni prices.....

However, I'll believe it when I see it. In this economy, I don't quite believe development plans. At least not as aggressive as they initially plan. If they do build it, I bet it will be scaled down and not nearly as cool.

Could you post a link or let us know where you heard this? Interesting idea.

Just Google "Time Square South Atlanta" and you should find several articles talking about this proposed project. Very interesting since I go down to this area often visiting Glenn's Kitchen to eat. I would love to see this area grow south towards Georgia State/5 points adding more Highlighted screens and pedestrian friendly entertainment.

I don't think Atlanta has to have just one focal point. Actually I think the Atlanta metro is known for have multiple focal points and this Time Square South place would just be another one. I figure it would work like the Time Square in NYC. Plenty of tourists would consider it the center of NY but no self-respecting NY'er would ever consider Times Square the heart of NYC. Five Points/Woodruff Park could be the Atlanta version of Grand Central Terminal(although admittedly less impressive). Maybe Marietta St between the two could become the equivalent of 42nd St.

Again with the "let's be like New York" ideas? Why are the big southern cities so obsessed with being little Big Apples?

Anyway, Dallas already tried the Times Square of the south thing, and it didn't go as well as planned. These types of ego-driven ideas never really do.

It doesn't necessarily have to be like New York. Times Square is just used as reference. Other cities have something like that too, such as Tokyo's Shibuya, London's Picadilly Circus, and LA Live. I think an attraction like that couldn't hurt Atlanta. I thought the area around Centennial Park, Phillips Arena and CNN Center looks a little like a mini-Times Square, since it has a few big screens.

Yeah, I'm not too optimistic on this one. The lower part of the building (and the location) appears to be tourist-focused, while the office building component is described like this:

"It would be geared to creative or high-tech companies with an influential Generation Y workforce."

I'm sorry, but tourists are pretty much antithetical to the mythical "high tech, creative" crowd. Those sorts of people would much rather be a dozen blocks to the north along Howell Mill.

Good point Testa. I'm part of the targeted office demographic, and the tourist district is not high on my list of desired work locations. The office space at Ponce City Market is more up my alley.
