First of all I know about the current economic crisis and I would not be seeking work until the crisis is over. Without the economic crisis I am curious as how people in Atlanta think about foreigners moving to Atlanta working and living there (legally of course) in particular Aussies! I have asked this question in the Dallas thread as well as to tell you the truth I like the idea of either Atlanta or Dallas. Thanks in advance for your replies!

It does not matter who you are or where you are from. Atlantans will welcome you no matter what. Atlanta is a diverse city with people from all over the world and we love the diversity. So come and experience our Southern Hospitality. You will not be displeased.

Indeed. It does not matter. If you are here legally, you have every right to work and it does not matter where you are hailing from. Atlanta is quite diverse and happily so. I, myself, am a foreigner and feel perfectly accepted and welcomed in this town.

You haven't moved here yet?

I could've sworn you made a thread a couple of months ago asking people how Atlanta was.

I came here from Australia this year. There are plenty of IT jobs in what I do. In fact there is a big shortage of skilled people. So I don't feel bad or anything that I took someone else's job.
I haven't spent much time at all in the city of Atlanta. The northern parts of Atlanta are the best IMO. At the moment Australia is in a massive housing bubble. So coming here to live is paradise.

I think that this "shortage" of IT workers is a big scam. There are plenty of American born people here who are trained in IT. One of my co-workers is trained by DeVry in IT and before he came to my company, he was employed somewhere else in IT before he was laid off. But he is unable to move out of my division & back into an IT job because no one has been willing to hire him in another IT job.

Also to note, at Dekalb Technical College & Gwinnett Technical College, huge classes of IT trained intelligent young people are coming out every semester, but many of them are not being picked up. This also proves that the IT worker "shortage" is a gigantic scam designed to steal American taxpayer wealth & hoard our country's resources for oligarchic gain.

Fact of the matter is these employers want employees that they can pay low wages & few benefits and can hold leverage over them. An employee with an H-1B Visa fits that bill.

That's why I personally feel with all my heart that the United States of America's approach to free-market & capitalism is a total failure on all levels. It does not give every regular citizen a decent shot at a good lifestyle. What our system at it's current state actually does is enabling cronyism, a low standard of living & feudalism that may in the future force the average American's quality-of-life standards down to Third-world levels if it gets out of hand.

I'm not holding this against you per se, so don't please don't take my soapbox opinionating the wrong way. I am simply saying that this country and most of its public & private leadership has failed to prove that they mean well.

It's time for new labor revolution I think, before these economic conditions deteriorate even more than they already have. Just my simple opinion, I guess.

Peace.

I have no problem with people from the European diaspora who speak English (Anglosphere) coming here, who are skilled. I do have a problem with every third world, non-skilled, non-assimilating, culture replacing person coming here, destroying the quality of life and our national identity. This is especially pronounced during a weak economy.

Absolutely! As you say, it's mostly the business community lobbying for cheap labor. They want someone else to train their workers because training workers costs money.

I don't think these problems you refer to are a result of domestic policies like FDR's socialism or Reaganite capitalism. They are a result of our international policies:

1. Free trade with 3rd World countries
2. Mass legal and illegal immigration
