I think this is a almost good analogy. I definitively wouldn't classy Decature the PBR/Skinny Jean hipster like lil 5 or EAV but it looks way more preppy then alternative. That and downtown Decayure closes at 11 pm. Where are people partying?

This is one of the best threads I have seen here in a while

and I'll try to add a bit:

Yuppie actually stands for Young Urban Professional... and I'd say that somewhat sums up Decatur, though, as said before, young is relative and I think Decatur is pushing middle-aged at this point.

Heading just outside the city of Decatur boundaries to Kirkwood, you find a younger (less affluent) crowd.

EAV and L5P are replete with hipsters of all varieties - from the trucker hat wearing PBR drinking tattoo afficionados to the fedora topped mustacheoed italian leather booters... but, to be honest, hipsterism has gone mainstream and any of the above varieties can be found anywhere in ATL.

I am looking for the nexus of neo-hillbillery - that is the newest and coolest image to don.

What do I know compared to you? I've only lived there for years up until recently.
Like I said before: Emory/Agnes Scott students and young professionals dominate the nighttime landscape. L5P and EAV it is not.

I've been looking at the area around "Murder Kroger." What does the age skew like around those parts?

EAV sounds neat, as does Little 5. Does the area around "Murder Kroger" and the Masquerade compare favorably?

This is what I think of when I think hipsters. It's a lot of DIY, rejecting mainstream, and converting less desirable areas into little trendy areas. Like NYC. The hipsters took over Greenwich Village, then got priced out. Took over SoHo, then got priced out. Now took over Williamsburg, and they are getting priced out. Now it's on to Greenpoint and Red Hook. That's why I love them. Lots of pride in the neighborhoods and they tend to be very nice and welcoming. Until the pretentious wannabe snobs come in wearing their Ray-Bans at night thinking they are hot stuff.

I think I would know what the sub-cultures in my own generation dress and act like. I have been out in Decatur, I am an expert on Atlanta nightlife, and I can spot a hipster of all types and kinds. Decatur may not be all hipsters, but it is certainly part of that scene.

The non-hipster nightlife circuit consists of Buckhead-Midtown-Virginia Highlands. The people that go out in Buckhead also go out in Midtown and VA-High, and vice versa. Notice that does not include Decatur. In fact, I am one of the only ones out of my circle of friends who has ever been out in Decatur. That is because Decatur is part of the separate and distinct hipster nightlife circuit, consisting of Decatur, EAV, L5P, and Edgewood Ave. Most of the people that go out in Decatur also go out in EAV and Edgwood Ave., and so on.

By the way, anyone can be a hipster, including Emory students and professionals.

That's the Old Fourth Ward. Lots of young people live there, but the nightlife options in that area don't compare to EAV.

So for East Atlanta, what areas should I avoid when looking for places? I read reviews that people have been robbed many times and a kidnapping happened too. They also said don't walk the streets at night. Is there truth behind this? I know I asked safety before but I want to make sure it's a decent enough place that's not just one street surrounded by crime.

So where are they partying? It certainly isn't downtown Decatur.
