In other words, behave as you would in any other city.

London is a vibrant city with lots of activities for young proffessionals but is very expensive, overcrowded and the weather is terrible. Atlanta has a lot of young black entrepreneurs who are doing well - something which is rare down here. We liked Atlanta because of it's lush landscape, good weather and friendly people, I always feel at home when I am there which is why I would like to make it my permanent residence. Ponce de leon was quite impressive at the time of visiting but I can image it may be slightly out of our budget. I wasnt the biggest fan of Decatur to be honest the malls were a bit shabby especially South Dekalb Mall.

I just want to point out that the area of Dectur you were in that you were not very impressed with was outside of the Decatur city limits in unincorporated Dekalb County. That area is close to 100% black, no diversity and is inhabited by mostly those with low incomes. It's "the hood" basically. Atlanta has alot of those in the suburbs. When people suggest Decatur they're referring to the city limits only. It's like night and day between the two.

And I second the suggestion for the city of Decatur. While Midtown would be more exciting for you, IMHO, I think your 300K would go alot further in the city of Decatur. Your budget can get you a cute 2 bedroom modern condo in Midtown, in a very walkable area. It can get get a 3 bedroom 2 bath house on a quarter acre and still be in a walkable area Decatur though.

$300K is pushing it in City of Decatur for a 3/2, unless you like fixer-uppers.

You might like Atlantic Station which is Midtown. Can anyone comment about West End if that would be an option?

There are actually some very nice neighborhoods that have Decatur addresses that aren't inside the city limits as well. Your post sounds as if the city of Decatur is surrounded by ghetto, and it simply is not. It's ghetto on certain sides of Decatur, but not every side.

Ok, I will have to investigate Decatur a little bit more. Atlantic station is cool but driving around that area was a nightmare. What about Ponce de Leon ave?

Ponce runs through many neighborhoods. Midtown, Poncey Highlands (south of Virigina Highlands), Druid Hills and into Decatur

The Emory area of Decatur as well as the areas toward Tucker and Buckhead are very nice, along Clairmont/North Decatur/Lavista/Briarcliff Roads...but they are not within the city limits of Decatur.

What are the best cities to relocate to? We are conservative African Americans with children who will attend Elementary school. We need to commute to Decatur for work purposes but prefer to live in the suburbs. We desire a diverse and safe community. Plan on purchasing a home around $300,000-$400,000?
