Hi - We are relocating to the Atlanta area for a job. The address for the office is in Atlanta but we would like to live outside the city. We are moving from a pretty quiet, small town in Kentucky so it is going to be a big change! Here is our info - I'd appreciate any advice you have on areas to look at especially but ANY advice/information would be a blessing. Thanks so much for your time!

Work Area: Atlanta (off of 285 near the Atlanta Airport)

Budget: We're paying $450 for a 3br/2ba in a good neighborhood right now so I'm aware there will be sticker shock - we'll be making in the neighborhood of $70,000 if that helps...

Type of Domicile: We'd like a house but would be open to renting an apt. for a few months.

Commute: 45 min. to 1 hour max if at all possible- less would be great. :-)

Schools: We homeschool so this is not very important but we do have 2 pre-teen girls. If anyone has any insight on local Christian homeschool groups I'd love to hear more! :-)

Nightlife: Not important.

Preferred Demographics: We are very family-oriented, conservative, and quiet - we'd like our girls to be safe more than anything but would appreciate a family friendly area.

Thanks again for taking the time to read & share any info you have!

-Melissa

Wondering what Sugar Hill is like - any opinions? Also, does anyone have an idea of what the commute from there to Atlanta would be? Thanks!

I can't help with areas near the airport, but I can tell you Sugar Hill would be waaaaay too long a commute, think in terms of hours, not minutes.

Sugar Hill is north of Atlanta---20 miles or so and the airport is located on the south side.

Here's a previous thread>>>

Newnan, Fayettevllle, East Point and College Park were suggested to this poster.

Peachtree City is another option but I don't think there are apartments or many options for renting as it is a planned community.

Yikes! Thanks Mattie. OK - How about south of Atlanta - does the traffic get any lighter going that way?

I've read several posts which indicated that the traffic on the south side is not as heavy as that on the north. You would need to select a specific location and then determine what sort of route would be required.

When I first moved to Atlanta, I found it very helpful to rent an apartment for the first 6 months so that I could find out which area I really wanted to live in.
good luck!

I would like to know what kind of area is the South East? In particular Shawn Wayne Ct?

Shawn Wayne Ct is East Atlanta, and not a great area of that neighborhood. In terms of safety, you can check out the crime maps here: Atlanta, GA Crime Map

I suspect you will want to be further south - maybe take a look at Ellenwood, McDonough or Newnan. You may be able to find a rental house there for a reasonable price.

Peachtree City.
Decatur is a good, safe area with great schools. But it is very liberal, relaxed way of thinking.
Most intown areas are very liberal, with the exception of some Buckhead neighborhoods.
