I am taking a new position with my company, and relocating to Atlanta with my wife from Washington DC. I graduated High School here in the late ‘90’s, but have not lived here since (and was only here for 3 ½ years) so my understanding of Atlanta is somewhat dated. My parents live in Vinnings. My wife and I are really looking for more of a city lifestyle than one in the suburbs. I was hoping to get some suggestions of areas to look at when we visit. I know the Vinnings, Buckhead, Smyrna area - However I feel that may be too suburban for us. I have heard Decatur might be a good option, though I am unsure of the safety issue with the area. Is there anywhere else I am missing? We are both in our early 30’s.

1. Budget

Planning on renting for a year then purchasing. Currently renting a 2BD, 2.5 Bath Townhouse in DC for $2k. Would like to spend a little less if possible.

2. House/Condo/Townhome?

House or Townhome

3. Employment Status(commute/work from home)

Working from Home

4. Children(public school vs. private)

No children currently

5.Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two

Urban

6. Easy access to public transit, important or not?

Not important

7.Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood.

Young professionals. Would like to be in a walkable community with amenities for dog walking. Really dreading the idea of having to drive to get a cup of coffee, or visit the local bar

There are a lot of great neighborhoods in Atlanta. Try the Brookhaven neighborhood - great for walking, using public transport, restaurants, etc. Very comfortable and friendly place to live in a city lifestyle. You can basically walk to a train station or take a bus and get to the Brookhaven station quickly.

Good luck!

Decatur, safety? As long as its in the actual city limits of Decatur there's little to worry about. The Decatur postal area extends to more questionable areas.
Check out Kirkwood, Kirkwood Neighbors' Organization (KNO) :: Kirkwood Neighborhood, Atlanta, GA. Lots of young professionals, everyone owns a dog, 5 parks, bike PATH, local pet store, boarding, and training. Downtown area has a pizza shop, 2 bars(2 more to open), vegan bakery, breakfast and bunch spot, soon to open craft coffee and beer shop, Elmyr. All of this within a 2 square mile neighborhood. Police precinct and fire station in the downtown district. Its also close to Decatur Square, Little 5 Points, East Atlanta Village, Virginia-Highlands, and Downtown Atlanta.
I know transit isn't a priority, but the neighborhood is served by 2 MARTA stations. Very nice people that all watch out for each other.
