Essentially, BJ is the NY and Washington of China. I think BJ has surpassed Chicago. I do firmly believe that BJ will be the future.
I think HK is a great place. But, I think NY has much more to offer. I think HK and San Francisco are more evenly matched.
I don't think any city in Asia really matches NY's cachet or buzz. However, HK would probably be the closest.

I think Tokyo would be a good match for NYC as well. But I do see that HK could be a good match as well. I have more
New Orleans,LA - Saigon, Vietnam: originally, I listed Hanoi as a match. Looking more into it, I find Saigon to be a better match for the same reasons I listed Hanoi as a match(French and Vietnamese influences, cuisine). There is one more. Saigon, like New Orleans, is a seaport located near a major river delta. Climates are similar(though Saigon is warmer and wetter). Saigon was even called "Paris of the Orient".

Tokyo really is a fantastic city. It certainly compares with NY in terms of population and being the cultural heartbeat of its country. But, I still don't think it captures NY's electricity. I don't think any city (in Asia) does.
HK and NY share an ethic diversity that gives them a dynamism that is lacking in many (Asian) cities. However, NY is so far ahead of HK when it comes to "high brow" entertainment like ballet, opera, theater, symphony, etc... These types of institutions lend cities enormous amounts of prestige. I don't think HK offers them anywhere near to the same extent as NY.
Obviously, I'm biased. Nothing is going to compare to NY and Beijing in my eyes. I'll just shut up about them now.
What about Shanghai? It's re-exploded into an international powerhouse recently. It's got the port and the industry. It's all about being new and brash. Los Angeles?
Both are hot & humid and are known for beaches with white and with crystal waters, many young adults from places outside of Florida/Thailand come to these beaches during brakes that aren't during their summer.
You took that one right out of my mouth. Perfect match. Both cities are high tech cities. In fact, the OP of this thread features the match of Sillicon Valley,CA with Bangalore,India.
Why Karachi? I would compare Houston more to Kuala Lumpur.
Hmmm. I have not been to Malaysia but if you go to Wikipedia then Karachi is a sister city to Houston. As far as entertainment goes both cities have same to offer. Beaches, restaurents, night life, etc.

Major oil cities, similar climate, huge and energetic. I would also compare Kuala Lumpur to Dallas,TX.
