I wonder if any of the Filipinos to come to my hometown's local university to take their nursing exams are from Tacloban.

What really sucks is that we spend trillions on military around the world, so that we can kill as many people as fast as possible anywhere on the planet. Yet, we don't have anything like giant "rescue carriers" roaming the oceans so they can be sent wherever a natural disaster is expected to strike. They should carry water, basic food, blankets, medical supplies, etc., all ready to be dropped by helicopters (also on board like jets on an aircraft carrier) wherever it is needed.

They need clean water, food, and money rather than prayers. Actually, the Philippines are one of the most religious countries on Earth, still they get pounded by one disaster after another. Maybe they should rethink their religiousness...

They're probably so religious because of the natural disasters, it's not that they get more natural disasters because they're religious...

One of the saddest article about a girl last word to her mother.

Daughter

Quote:
“Ma, just let go. Save yourself,” said the girl, whose body was pierced by wooden splinters from houses crushed by Supertyphoon “Yolanda.”

“I was holding her and I kept telling her to hang on, that I was going to bring her up. But she just gave up,” said Tenegra, her face contorted in grief.

That's sad indeed. A person whose life had just begun. The mother must feel terrible to have outlived her daughter...

the point of my posting of that story is that the military were already there to take on rescue operations, but they themselves became the victims of the tidal surge.

Anyway, I am not very optimistic with regard to those climate talks, nobody is really willing to sacrifice their comfort in order to save some people on the other side of the world. At the end of the day only hard-core engineering will protect countries in such vulnerable regions. When there is a big disaster we donate a couple of millions to feel good about ourselves and carry on as if nothing has happened...
Look, I am an agnostic atheist myself, but during a time when people have lost everyone and everything you don't whine about praying when for some of them it is the only comfort, real or imagined, that they have.

There is an entire forum if you want to talk about the usefulness of prayer but as someone who still hasn't reached their family members I would really appreciate it if you didn't use a natural disaster of epic proportions to try to make your point.
