I have been to South Rim several times, I will be in area first part of November. Is the North Rim open that late in the year and if so how far is it from Flagstaff and is it worth the drive?
thanks

I think they close the North Rim sometime in October because of winter weather hazard that could bring a freak storm anytime after the 1st. Might be wrong, but I don't think so. North Rim always has less visitors because of it's difficult access and being out of the way. More nature though. Thicker forests too.

The North Rim is officially open from mid-May through mid-October. I have never been, but from what I hear it's significantly less crowded than the south rim and affords some really nice views as well. I think it's geared more to people who are wanting to camp or relax, as opposed to using it as a jumping-off spot for trips to the bottom of the canyon or a quick visit. If you have the time and don't mind the extra drive, it would probably be awesome.

If you can def go visit the north rim, In my opinion its hands down the winner over the south rim.
Better wildlife viewing has great view points plus you can learn about Brighty the Burro in the lodge.
The park has its own website for additional info or you can go visit www.nps.gov

The elevation of the North Rim is much higher, so the forests are different and much thicker. I've been there a couple of times, but not recently. The views are, of course, spectacular, as they are from the South. On balance, I much prefer it to the South Rim, but it is a much longer drive.

I was at the North Rim on Labor Day weekend and it wasn't too crowded, which suits me fine. I hate crowds. It's around 8800' and having a beer or two can be a cheap buzz there. And they had pretty decent beer up there too.

Nice picture. That picture illustrates how much higher the North Rim is than the South.

thanks for all the info. Sounds like I might want to wait until a different time of year.
