I took some leave last summer and went home to Arizona. I noticed my sister's license plate on her car, 7 digits. When the hell did that start? That really grinds my gears, that there are that many people in the state of Arizona now, that we need 7 digit license plates. We are just as bad as California now. I live in Texas right now, (Army) and Texas is a BIG state. Still 6 digit license plates. What the hell.

Suffice to say my daily driver has a 7 digit plate but; I have three 6 digit Arizona license plates (in my name) stashed away for future use

I don't like the 7-digit plates either. Here in MD, we went to 7 digits for a while, but they got creative with the numbering system and were able to go back to 6 digits. So don't give up hope...

I think it happened before 2009. I don't mind the 7 digits (except I'll bet they are harder to remember) as much as the fact that they look like they are made of heavy cardboard. No substitute for the stamped metal plates.

The mass amounts of people who haved moved into the greater phoenix area in the past 9 years, I don't see it changing back. Luckily my truck has a 6 digit plate. I will never have a 7 digit plate, from here on out, I will have Veteran plates.

Correct: my 7 digit plate adorned another car in early 2008; if anything, I believe they were released late 2007.

It happened sometime between March 2008 and July 2008. March 2008 is when I got my plates for my new truck. July is when I saw my sister's plate when I went home to Az on vacation.

Maybe not that many people in Arizona, AZBatman.

Not certain but I believe the DMV never reuses as plate number so if a vehicle "passes away" or moves to another state, so goes the plate number.
